Brouwerij Hoop (Brewery)

Hoop Brewery (brouwerij Hoop in Dutch) is a must-visit pub in the picturesque Zaandijk. It is known for its take on pub food and unique locally brewed beers in a relaxed setting. It is just around the corner from the charming windmills of the Zaanse Schans, offering a Dutch brewery experience to enrich your visit to the local area.

With creative beer brewing techniques and a cosy, welcoming ambience, Hoop Brewery is a highlight for beer lovers, pub foodies, and anyone looking for a break from visiting the Zaanse Schans.

Hoop Brewery is in the picturesque village of Zaandijk, located north of Amsterdam in the Zaanstreek region. Zaandijk is known for its historic windmills and distinctive green wooden houses lining the Zaan River.

The pub is located at Lagedijk 71, 1544 BC Zaandijk, which opened in 2016. It’s housed in a modern, light-filled building built specifically for the brewery. This is not your dark, dingy beer hall! The main feature of the dining space is large windows into the brewing area, which allows you to view the beer tanks.

When visiting the Zaanse schans, the brewery is reachable with a 20 minute walk.

Head over the Juliana Bridge, view Windmill De Bleeke Dood, and continue down the Lagedijk, which is filled with monumental homes.

The full route to Brouwerij Hoop is available via Google Maps here.

The Stars of the Show - The Beers!

Brouwerij Hoop brews a wide range of craft beer, from seasonal beer like Winter Warming Chocolate Porter or Awesome Autumn Rum Bock to their regular collection of styles, from blond ale to Triple IPA. This is a beer lover’s paradise!

The brewers frequently experiment with new styles and flavours. For Zaanstad’s 50th anniversary, they released 8 new beers. And remember the incredibly unique Mustard Beer made from the local Zaans Mustard. It’s a must-try with a portion of bitterballen!

Visitors can sample small pours of multiple beers in a beer tasting to get the chance to try more of the range of beers on offer.

The Pub Food

Brouwerij Hoop serves Dutch and International pub fare paired with its handcrafted beers. Some items on the menu actually feature their beer as the star ingredient.

The menu features a range of appetizers, main dishes, and desserts, focusing on sharing. New to the menu is pulled chicken tacos, and as you can tell by the photo, half the plate was gone before I could snap a picture.

There are also traditional Dutch bar snacks such as bitterballen and cheese and charcuterie boards.

The fries are incredibly important at any pub, and Hoop does not disappoint! The fries are fried for maximum crispness on the outside and fluffiness within. They are paired the Dutch way with a side of mayo.

The menu includes traditional pub food, such as burgers, ribs, finger foods, and salads. It has options for all tastes and preferences, including vegetarian options.

The Spareribs
The Spareribs - The coleslaw was insanely good, it needed more!

The Restaurant has a fully open kitchen, where you can watch the chef’s ready the meals.  I find this fascinating, and I love their openness with their food and cooking.

Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends. The whole food menu is available on the Brouwerij Hoop Website.

Kids are more than Welcome

Despite being a pub, it’s a bright, family-friendly location! There are games for children and multiple high chairs available. Furthermore, there is a special kids’ menu for the little ones.

Brewery Tours

Hoop Brewery offers fascinating behind-the-scenes tours of their brewery, where you can learn about beer-making. Tours are currently only per email to book, and you have three options. So take the time to email ahead and book your desired tour to complement your tour of the Zaanse Schans.

Tours are available in English and Dutch, and I highly recommend taking the guided tour with tasting. The tasting plank is a great way to try multiple delicious beers and compare their flavours.

Outdoor Seating

Outdoor seating is available at the brewery. It’s a courtyard enclosed on 3 sides, providing shelter from the wind. It is not a traditional beer garden but offers tables and picnic benches to sit and enjoy the local beers in the sun.

As it is enclosed on three sides, the view is limited and looks towards the side of the neighbour’s home and the street. But you do not go to Hoop for the views but for the unique beers!

Shop Local

Can you not get a seat at Hoop Brewery? They have an excellent shop in front of the brewpub, where you can purchase beer and merchandise to take home. The shop stocks all of Hoop’s core range of beers and offers tasting packages and mixed boxes. You’ll also find their rotating seasonal and limited-release beers when available. Beyond beer, the shop has glasses, coasters, t-shirts, and other great souvenirs.

It’s worthwhile stopping by the shop even if you don’t take a tour, as it offers the chance to pick up beers and memorabilia you will only find inside the brewery.

The variety beer packages makes lovely gifts!

The knowledgeable staff can provide tasting notes and pairing advice for the beers. It’s the perfect place to stock up on Dutch souvenirs from this iconic brewery.

Final Thoughts

Don’t be disappointed! Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends. You can book online or by phone. Walk-ins are accepted, but you may have to wait for a table.

Arrive hungry! You’ll want to sample several dishes and beers, so come with an appetite. Go for the tasting flight to try all the beers.

Check the website or social media for special events like beer launches, Oktoberfest, trivia nights, etc., as these can get busy.
