Romance and History Meet at Cafe de Slager

Cafe de Slager is a charming restaurant located in Zaandijk, right around the corner from the Zaanse Schans windmills and across the street from the colourful windmill De Bleeke Dood (The Pale Death). The restaurant is situated in a historical building itself, dating back to 1684.  In the 17th century it was used as a slaughterhouse (outside) and eventually a butcher shop.

This inspired the name “Cafe de Slager”, which translates to “Cafe the Butcher” in Dutch. Despite its modest Zaanse exterior, Cafe de Slager contains many hints to its rich history inside, making it a unique and atmospheric dining experience. With its combination of historical charm, romantic ambiance, and flavourful cuisine, Cafe de Slager is a hidden gem worth discovering in the Zaan region.

Atmosphere

The interior of Cafe de Slager hints towards its historical past. There are not one, but two historical tiled fireplaces and an original bed stay where the coat area now is. Showing how the spaces would have been used previously.

The old wooden walls adding to the moody and romantic atmosphere. As soon as you enter, you feel transported back in time to the 17th century. The dark interior is lit primarily by candles, with rich wooden accents throughout. It’s the perfect spot for a romantic dinner or night out with friends. The unique setting paired with warm lighting makes for a cozy and intimate dining experience.

The Food

The menu when we were recently there focuses on reinvented classics with a modern twist. During our visit, we opted for the menu of the day which offers excellent value at €37.50 for four courses. This sharing menu allowed us to sample a variety of their offerings.

The price of the menu of the can vary depending on the items on the menu.  There is often the possibility to opt for a 3 or 4 course version.

The menu at Cafe de Slager is simple, in terms that there is not a large variety of items to choose from.  However, the items available are often a meat or two, burger, fish and vegetarian item.

Something for everyone.

Everything I have eaten at Cafe de Slager has been fresh and simple fare.  It’s straight forward, classic favourites, well cooked.

The menu of the day provides excellent value while also allowing diners to sample some of Cafe de Slager’s best offerings in an approachable 4-course format. We’ll be back to further explore their menu in the future.

Special mention for the cheese plate, which is my typical go to dessert.

The toasts included is a welcomed surprise and usually not included on a cheese plate.  These were perfectly crunchy with a hint of garlic.

They really should be a must for all cheese plates!

The Drinks

The wine menu at Cafe de Slager had plenty of excellent choices across a range of prices. There was something for every taste and budget.

In addition to wine, the restaurant also serves a good variety of local beers from the Hoop Brewery in Zaandijk. There’s also a bar with seating if you’d prefer a drink on your walk, rather than a full meal.

Outdoor Seating

The outdoor seating at Cafe de Slager is just off the main road.  Despite this, the atmosphere is quaint.

The backdrop of the monumental building and De Bleeke Dood windmill across the street, creates a perfect Zaandam representation.

Enjoy a glass of wine on a warm evening under the stately windmill across the street.

Planning Ahead

We were informed that there was a new menu coming out shortly, so you may want to check it out online at Cafe De Slager. This is definitely a restaurant we plan to return to, particularly because the day menu means regular new options to choose from.

We highly recommend making reservations, especially if you plan to dine on a weekend night. We arrived early, but the restaurant quickly filled up.

Cafe de Slager would also make for a great lunch spot while visiting nearby Zaanse Schans. Whether for a special occasion or casual meal, this restaurant comes recommended, just be sure to call ahead for availability if visiting during peak times.
