Fort K’ijk: A Historical Fort Turned Modern Community

Tucked away in the countryside near Uitgeest, just off of the Krommeniedijk lies Fort K’ijk, a unique historic site that now serves as a communal space for dining, recreation, and living. Originally built in 1897 as a fortress for nearly 300 soldiers, this military base remained operational until 1956 as part of the Dutch Waterline defence system.

Though no longer an active army facility, the fort has taken on new life as a one-of-a-kind residential and social centre.

Inside the fort walls, you will find a cozy tea house along with homes for young adults with autism, providing a peaceful, sustainable living environment. Energy efficient systems allow the community to produce 80% of its own power.

Nature lovers can explore the fort’s surrounding meadows and wetlands, a habitat for diverse wildlife species. Don’t miss the KIJK lookout, a free observation dome with magical 360-degree views. From its military origins to an innovative community space, Fort K’ijk offers a glimpse into Holland’s history while creating an inclusive place for the future.
