American Windmill De Herkules

De Herkules Windmill is a historic site in Zaanstad that tells the story of water management and preservation. It is located in the Kalverpolder, just a short walk from the Zaanse Schans.

This 16-meter-tall windmill with an 11-meter-diameter wind wheel was built in 1922, replacing an even older watermill from 1636. The Wind Engine installed in 1922 is an American invention and is now a national monument.

It’s one of a kind in the area.

The wind engine is unmanned. The two wind vanes allow the mill to point itself to the wind. If the wind speed is too high, the wind wheel is automatically turned out of the wind. Handy with the wind storms in the area.

Located just off of the Ringdijk Bike Path and visible from Leeghwaterweg.

For decades, De Herkules regulated the water level in the surrounding polder land. However, by the 1990s, it faced demolition. Thanks to donations and community support, the windmill underwent renovation in 1995-1996 and was saved as a cultural heritage site.

The windmill continued operating until 2005 when an electric pump took over its water regulation duties. But this historic site, with its 30-bladed wind wheel, still stands tall as a monument to Kalverpolder’s past.
